Samira Saidi
Samira Saidi is an Afro-European woman of color, whose multidisciplinary practice involves photography, writing, and performance. In her art, she aims to inspect and shift the sociological structures of race, the perception of belonging, and the exploration of the dual nature of intersectional identity.
She lives and works in Vienna, Austria and Accra, Ghana.
Education
Saidi holds a BA from the Royal Academy of Arts, Den Haag, and is currently pursuing an MA in Applied Human Rights at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna.
Technique
Generally, Saidi expresses herself through photography, writing, and performance art, often creating multi-media artworks that aim to spark critical conversations about socio-economic topics. In past years, she has expanded her practice into the realms of documentary photography and photojournalism.
Inspiration
For Saidi, identity does not only shape her artistic practice but every aspect of her existence. Personal experiences can serve as a starting point for artworks that address complex socio-economic, historical, and cultural subjects: exploring our relationship to the environment, questions of identity and belonging and colonial inheritance.
Activism is an important component of her art, addressing questions of human rights, raising awareness, and encouraging dialogue and community engagement. Working between Austria and Ghana, her works emerge from two distinct contexts and are deeply impacted by the artist’s environment. When working in Europe, she is drawn to contemporary issues that deal raise social engagement and stimulate critical dialogue. In contrast, the series created in Africa tend to embody a more philosophical and meditative approach.
