“Godmothers of Tomorrow” is a photographic and written exploration and reimagination of women pioneers of color from the 18th and 19th centuries. The series is a multilayered work that incorporates photography, sculptures, and poetry. Saidi takes inspiration from historical artworks, including paintings, sculptures, and photographs. Among her references is the portrait of an unnamed black woman, Portrait d'une femme noire (1800) by Marie-Guillemine Benoist, and Ourika (1793) by Sophie de Tott. This striking series of black and white photographs present different aspects of the African diaspora in the French context and celebrates these women who have become role models for future generations.
