Cordero’s identification with the sower is rooted in his desire to escape from the unfettered development and industrialization of Italy, specifically in the region of Piemonte, where the artist grew up. The sower is a romantic figure that stands in contrast to the modern factory worker. He respects the environment instead of seeking to subjugate it, and the sower is symbolic of a harmonious relationship between the worker and nature.
