Chao conceived Beast of Burden in response to being told, “not to carry the weight of the world on my shoulders.” With this in mind, she was reminded of the film Powaqqatsi, specifically a scene in which a donkey slowly pulls a cart. The series celebrates the strength of the human spirit in overcoming adversity. Obscura proudly proclaims, “I am not weak,” serving as a declaration of inner power.
