Visual artist Elaine B. Chao- portrait

Elaine B. Chao

Elaine B. Chao is a traditional-digital hybrid artist, who creates vivid images layered with bright colors and expressive strokes. Her process begins with traditional painting techniques on paper or canvas, to which she applies digital effects once these are imported into an image manipulation program. Chao's hybrid approach highlights the new possibilities that arise from blurring the boundaries between traditional and digital art. Her art echoes the contemporary moment, reflecting the expanding digital presence in art while remaining rooted in traditional art forms. Even though her practice focuses on digital printmaking, she also continues to paint.

She lives and works in New York, United States.

Education

She earned her BA in Art from Rutgers University (2013), New Brunswick, United States.

Technique

For her traditional works, Chao often paints with a large knife, which allows her to apply bold and broad strokes and achieve textural roughness. Mixing different paints, acrylic, oil and flashe, she explores potential contrasts, and depths of texture, adding richness and complexity to her paintings.

Digital printmaking forms the foundation of her practice. When combining traditional and digital techniques, she begins by importing her paintings into image manipulation programs to blend, apply filters and run actions. The final results are digital artworks printed on archival paper or canvas.

Inspiration

Chao draws inspiration from a range of sources: music, poetry, film, and visual arts.  Influences of ancient Chinese art come through the inclusion of Chinese characters in artworks or suggestions of a Chinese landscape. Her art is also informed by the works of artists Gerhard Richter and Paul Klee as well as the films of Wong Kar Wai.
