Jesus Torio
Jesus Torio is an Andalusian visual artist and nurse, working in the medium of photography. His artistic practice is rooted in personal experiences, most notably his work as a nurse in a hospital word. In his art, he explores themes of color and abstraction, aiming to create images that inspire a state of meditation and reflection, allowing the viewer to discover their own interpretations and meanings.
He lives and works in Andalusia, Spain.
Education
Torio began his career when he pursued a nursing degree in Madrid. After completing his degree, he moved to the UK, where he worked as a nurse while exploring his passion for art by studying photography in Edinburgh. However, his degree was interrupted by the Covid pandemic. As the demands of being a healthcare worker intensified, he was forced to complete his BA in Photography later than expected. In 2020, he began studying online for an MA in Photography at the Royal College of Art in London, which he completed in 2022.
Technique
Torio’s distinct style came about through a happy accident that involved a broken printer. When the printer malfunctioned, his photographs became magenta, cyan, and yellow lines. Looking at his work in a new light, he began scanning, recoloring, and processing the images in Photoshop. The new pictures had abstract and painterly qualities that appealed to the artist. For Torio, these works connect to his experience as a nurse working in a dementia ward. Instead of watching memories fade, he could recompose this reality into colorful and streaked imagery with an abstract dimension.
Inspiration
Torio’s art is shaped by the personal events that transpired in his life. He draws inspiration from the bright and warm environment of Andalusia as well as his work as a nurse. Finding healing through the creative process, his art responds to events that impact his reality: the experiences of a healthcare worker during the Covid-19 pandemic, the impact of the pandemic on mental health, and his work with dementia patients.
Influenced by painting and cinema, his work explores themes of color and abstraction. Much like a painter or film director, every image holds meaning and is carefully designed, photographed, and edited.

Exhibitions
Torio’s photographs have been exhibited in galleries and festivals across Europe. Among these are: Out of the Blue Photography Exhibition, Edinburgh, UK; AOP Awards Finalist Exhibition, Edinburgh, UK; Young Talent Dior, Arles Photo Festival, LUMA, Arles, France; Copeland Gallery, London, UK; and Meet You Festival, Teatro Calderon, Valladolid, Spain.
Notable Distinctions
In 2022, he was selected as a Laureate of the Dior Awards for Young Talents. He was also a two-time finalist of the AOP Student Awards as well as the finalist at the British Photography Awards. Torio was among the selected artists at the COCA Project Awards and LensCulture Open Awards.
